3 Acts - Mmm Juice

So, I am kind of on a binge right now with my 3 act posts, but I have had this one for awhile and I have not posted it, but after reading this comment on Dan Meyer's blog I decided I should put this up as a possible elementary level 3 acts lesson.  Here it is....

Act 1 - Mmm Juice....

I have a goofy little set up for this, where I say I'm making drinks for my friends, do I have enough?
Ask them what they think?  If so how many glasses do you think I can fill?  Give me a number that is too high and a number that too is small.  Ask your students what information we need to know.  Then we are on to Act 2 (and here is where the differentiation comes in...

Act 2 - Measurements (Grades 4-6?)

Act 2 Measurements (Grades 8-10)

If you want students to find the volume of each of these containers you can use these pictures to do the trick (jump-high-five for differentiation!).

Act 3 The Reveal

Sequels

  • How many cans of juice do I need to give one cup of juice to the whole class? To the whole school?
  • How big of a container do I need to hold all the juice for the whole class? The whole school?

Great 3 acts Timon, really impressed. I will defintely be trying this out with my classes. I would though like some more information if possible - some of it is laziness on my part.
1. The diameter of the glasses at the top and bottom.
2. The diameter of the jug.
3. The amount of water added to the pulp - preferably a photo of the can / container label.
Great idea, btw I am thoroughly enjoying your work some great stuff. The presentation of all your work is top class, cheers for sharing!

Thanks Damian!

I did this with my grade 8's as a review of multiplication and division, and they were really engaged, tell me how it goes with your guys.

The answers to your questions are as follows...
1.) 9 cm on top, 7.5 cm below.
2.) 13 cm for the jug.
3.) I have a photo of the can at the beginning of the post. Click it to enlarge.

What grade will you use this for? Grade 8 seemed really ideal for me (they were challenged enough just by having to come up with the information that they need).

Hi Tim,
sorry for the delay - I am planning to use it with my year 9 and year 10 classes (ages 12 - 14) depending on the ability of the group.
Sorry still struggling on the label - how much water do you need to add to the concentrate?

I will tell you how it went once I have done it.

Thanks again.

Hey Damian,

The volume is 355. Maybe I will do a zoom in re-edit of the photo. 3 cans of water to one can of concentrate.

Cheers!

Here's a geogebra app I made to help my students determine the dimensions of the truncated cone and find the volume of the glass.
